General Medical Council (GMC) Good Medical Practice Consultation

19th May 2022

Good medical practice sets out the standards of patient care and the professional behaviours expected from every doctor working in the UK. All doctors practicing in the UK are required to register with the General Medical Council (GMC), and agree to follow the standards set out in Good medical practice throughout their careers.

The General Medical Council wants to make sure that Good medical practice guidance continues to reflect what patients need from their doctors, and what doctors need from each other, to provide the best possible care. The GMC are running a public consultation on an updated draft of the guidance, which gives members of the public a chance to influence its content.

Good medical practice underpins everything that doctors do and the care we all receive throughout our lives. It’s vital it reflects the experiences of those who use and are affected by it. These sessions are an opportunity for patients in Northern Ireland to give feedback on what they need from their doctors, in terms of: how doctors communicate with patients; how doctors work together in the interest of patient safety; and how doctors carry out their duties to tackle discrimination and bias. They will include a discussion of the issues with illustrative case studies and interactive polling.

The Patient and Client Council wishes to extend an invitation to one of the following virtual engagement sessions:

  • Tuesday 7th June 6pm
  • Wednesday 8th June 10am
