NMC Public Voices Forum

14th July 2022

The Nursing & Midwifery Council want to hear from you!

They’re inviting people and communities to help shape their regulatory work.

  • Are you interested in nursing, midwifery or health and social care?
  • Do you want to help shape the professional regulation of nurses, midwives and nursing associates?
  • Or do you have lived experience of particular health needs?

If so, read more about how you can get involved.

About the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

We want to see safe, effective and kind nursing and midwifery that improves everyone’s health and wellbeing. As the professional regulator of almost 745,000 nursing and midwifery professionals, we have an important role to play in making this vision a reality.

Our core role is to regulate. First, we promote high education and professional standards for nurses and midwives across the UK, and nursing associates in England. Second, we maintain the register of professionals eligible to practise. Third, we investigate concerns about nurses, midwives and nursing associates – something that affects less that one percent of professionals each year. We believe in giving professionals the chance to address concerns, but we’ll always take action when needed.

We’re here to promote and uphold professional standards, which the public has a right to expect. That’s why we’re improving the way we regulate, enhancing our support for professionals and the public, and working with our partners to influence the future of health and social care.

It’s so important that we hear from and work with you – people who use nursing or midwifery services. We want to know about your experience, and what’s important to you. How can we do more to realise our vision of safe, effective and kind nursing and midwifery?

What can I get involved in?

  • You can share your views and experience to shape NMC plans and guide their work. This could be work like the standards NMC set for nursing and midwifery, or improving our support for members of the public who raise concerns with us.
  • You might co-produce policies or standards with NMC, and take part in discussions or interviews so that your experience of health and care influences what NMC do.
  • Sometimes you’ll work with NMC to help improve how they communicate. This could be making sure they’re sharing the right information, and that what they’re saying is useful and clear.

What will I get out of it?

It will vary from person to person but it could be the chance to:

  • make a difference and use your lived experience to improve things for others
  • learn new skills and to develop your knowledge
  • meet people and share ideas and experiences.

What support will I receive?

  • NMC will give you plenty of notice about meeting times and dates.
  • NMC will make you feed welcome and support you to take part.
  • If you need additional support or adjustments, NMC will do everything they can to support you.
  • Payment for your time and expenses, such as travel costs.

I’d like to find out more – what do I do?

Please email PublicEngagement@nmc-uk.org or call 020 4548 9212, for an informal chat and more information. Closing date 3rd August 2022.

NMC are particular keen to increase representation from Northern Ireland. Spaces are limited – NMC keen to hear from 2-3 people with lived experience. However, there are also opportunites for ad-hoc involvement so please get in touch if you are interested. Most Public Voice Forum meetings happen virtually, although ideally those interested would be willing to travel for occasional face-to-face meetings.
