Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt, has officially launched the Patient and Client Council’s (PCC) new website and suite of animated videos to increase awareness and accessibility of Patient and Client Council services.

Ruth Sutherland, PCC Chairperson and Meadhbha Monaghan, PCC Chief Executive give Health Minister Mike Nesbitt a preview of the new website during a recent visit to the PCC.

Health Minister, Mike Nesbitt said: “Ensuring the voice of the public is heard, listened to and acted upon within Health and Social Care is extremely important to ensuring quality of care, service development and sustainable reform. The independent work the PCC is tasked to do is vitally important for members of the public and the HSC in general. I endorse this raising awareness campaign and the accessible materials that have been developed.

“I encourage those within the HSC system to promote public awareness of the PCC and ensure they can access the advocacy and engagement services they offer when they are needed.

“I would also appeal to the public; if you have a concern or issue about health or social care or would like to get involved to improve the services of today and shape the services of tomorrow, get in contact with the PCC.”

The PCC has an independent statutory remit to represent the interests of patients, clients, carers and communities in Health and Social Care (HSC).

The new resources, which have been developed in close collaboration with members of the public (patients, clients, carers), staff and support organisations, can be viewed at www.pcc-ni.net and via the PCC’s YouTube Channel.

Meadhbha Monaghan, PCC Chief Executive, explained why public engagement and involvement is so important: “The public are experts, by experience, in the care they or someone they care for has received. This experience and expertise should not be lost to the system, and if appropriately utilised, the public can add significant value to the commissioning and design of services, and their safety, across the region.

“The PCC, has a role in providing independent assurance to the Department of Health and the Minister that the public are being appropriately listened to and engaged with by service providers and those developing new services across the HSC. We very much welcome the Minister’s endorsement of our new website, explanatory videos and the importance of our work.”

The PCC offer opportunities to get involved in the Health and Social Care system and have a range of options for accessing their services;
