PCC Launch Advocacy Thought Paper

The Patient and Client Council (PCC) has today published an Advocacy Thought Paper.

This paper, and call to action, are a function of PCC’s statutory role within the health and social care system.  It represents a culmination of evidence and insights from PCC’s practice, representation to recent reviews and Public Inquiries and critically, what we have heard from working directly with people.

The publication of this thought paper coincides with the recent publication of the Muckamore Abbey Hospital Inquiry Report and the Urology Inquiry Report.  A core theme emerging is the need to ensure the voice and concerns of the public are listened to, with sufficient weight and respect, and are acted upon with purpose at all levels within the Health and Social Care system.

It is clear to us that standardised and regional independent advocacy support is crucial to achieving this and to supporting quality, safety, good governance and independent assurance within the HSC.

The purpose of the paper is to prompt discussion and coalesce opinion and momentum on this vitally important issue. The paper sets out a blueprint for incremental change, and includes a number of suggested actions to achieve this.  It does not make recommendations for implementation – that is a discussion we hope will follow.
